Polaris Lighting delivered the lighting solutions for ENSANA Aquahouse Hotel & SPA, a five-star hotel and wellness complex in the Sts Constantine and Helena resort. Completed in 2022, the property is located only 25 metres from the Black Sea coast and is surrounded by the area’s characteristic mature greenery. The lighting covers the shared spaces, restaurants, spa centre, swimming pools, façades and landscaped grounds.
STARH’s architectural design combines soft sandy tones, natural materials and distinctive flattened arches inspired by formations created by the sea along the rocky coastline. The lighting concept developed by Polaris Lighting follows the same architectural language. Delicate accents reveal the curves and surface textures without disturbing the calm appearance of the building.
Lighting within the lobby and main shared spaces is organised across several layers. Discreet general illumination provides visual comfort, concealed lines emphasise the architectural forms, and compositions of circular luminaires introduce a recognisable decorative feature. Their shape resembles ripples on the surface of water and reinforces the sense of movement running throughout the interior.
The restaurants and bars each have a distinctive character while remaining part of the complex’s unified design concept. Decorative pendant luminaires create more intimate zones around tables and bar counters, highlight the natural wood finishes and establish a welcoming atmosphere. Accent lighting directs attention towards carefully selected interior details without interrupting the calm visual rhythm.
Within the spa areas, the lighting responds to the primary purpose of the space: relaxation and recovery. Subdued illumination, glowing perimeter lines and carefully positioned accents reduce harsh contrasts and establish a peaceful environment. Around the swimming pools, light defines the architectural outlines and reflections on the water while supporting clear orientation throughout the space.
The mature black pine trees are an important part of the architectural concept, and many of them were preserved during the hotel’s construction. The exterior lighting follows this approach through discreet landscape luminaires and controlled accents directed towards the vegetation. Paths, entrances and areas around the outdoor pools are clearly illuminated without taking away from the natural character of the night-time environment.
ENSANA Aquahouse offers more than 400 rooms and suites, several restaurants, extensive spa facilities and 11 pools and water attractions. Across this large-scale project, Polaris Lighting created a consistent lighting environment that connects the complex’s different functions. The result is a balanced combination of architectural emphasis, visual comfort, energy efficiency and an atmosphere inspired by the sea.
