Polaris Lighting delivered the lighting for UNICA, one of the most distinctive new gastronomic destinations in central Sofia. The restaurant is located at 8A Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard within a seven-storey residential building recognised as part of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage. Completed in 2022, IPA’s 597 sq.m interior occupies a basement level and two floors above ground.
The solution developed by Polaris Lighting combines linear luminaires, pendants, chandeliers, recessed and surface-mounted LED downlights, LED spotlights, magnetic systems and different lighting modules. Each type of light performs a specific function, from balanced general illumination to localised accents above the tables, wine displays, decorative walls and architectural details.
Among the interior’s most characteristic features are 47 hand-painted spherical luminaires. Positioned above the tables, they create intimate islands of light that define the dining areas without visually separating the rooms. Their varied colours and decorative patterns turn the luminaires into individual design features and strengthen the unique identity of the restaurant.
The unifying element of the interior is a series of sculptural timber structures that extend across the ceilings and staircases like intertwined branches or vines. Part of the lighting is integrated directly into these forms and directs light upwards towards the exposed concrete. The resulting soft reflected illumination emphasises the organic geometry, adds depth and establishes a visual connection between the different levels.
Within the entrance, retail area and wine display, the lighting performs both a practical and presentational role. Integrated lines within the furniture and display cases highlight selected products, while adjustable spotlights allow individual accents to be adapted according to the arrangement and the required lighting scenario.
UNICA’s material palette combines natural timber, turquoise surfaces, exposed concrete, herringbone parquet, mirrors and abundant planting. The light reveals these colours and textures without making them appear excessively bright. Carefully directed accents on the living walls reinforce the impression of an artificial landscape and continue the central idea of intertwining architecture with nature.
The lighting of the stairs and circulation areas creates a smooth transition between the two restaurant levels. Discreet linear solutions follow the architecture and support orientation while preserving the intimate character of the dining environment.
UNICA provides 105 seats and combines Italian gastronomic culture with a distinctive Bulgarian interpretation. The lighting delivered by Polaris Lighting supports this concept through a warm atmosphere, flexible accents and careful integration into the architectural elements. The interior won first prize in the Public Interior – Restaurant category at the Dibla Design Awards 2022 and was also named Sofia’s Best New Restaurant for 2022 by Go Guide.
