Polaris Lighting delivered the professional lighting for ONYX Building, a multifunctional development located at the prominent intersection of Bulgaria Boulevard and Acad. Ivan Geshov Boulevard in Sofia. The complex includes seven office levels, retail areas, a restaurant, a spacious double-height lobby and three underground parking levels. Designed by Proarch AD, the development received the Office Building of the Year award in Bulgaria’s national Building of the Year 2024 competition.
The different functions within the building required a lighting solution that could provide good visibility, highlight the interior architecture and establish a consistent visual language. Customised S-Line 48 OM linear luminaires, magnetic systems and recessed LED downlights were selected for the project. Their combination provides even illumination without unwanted dark areas, complemented by precise accents on materials and important interior features.
The central lobby creates the first impression for everyone entering the building. The double-height space features natural colours, vertical wood finishes and a light stone floor. Linear systems follow the principal architectural axes across the ceiling, while directional modules highlight the reception desk and tall clad columns. The lighting preserves the sense of scale, supports clear orientation and gives the entrance the representative character expected from a contemporary Class A office building.
Lighting in the office and conference areas is designed to support concentration, extended periods of work and clear visibility around desks and meeting tables. The magnetic systems combine linear light modules with compact directional fixtures. The linear elements provide the main layer of even illumination, while individual spotlights introduce accents and emphasise selected areas. The black system lines integrate naturally into the minimalist design and create a precise graphic composition across the ceiling.
Linear luminaires are integrated between the dark ceiling baffles in the corridors. Their repeated arrangement introduces rhythm and visually extends the direction of movement. The solution maintains consistent visibility throughout the circulation spaces while highlighting the contrast between the black ceiling, light flooring, timber accents and glazed office partitions. Light therefore becomes an effective architectural guide rather than simply a technical necessity.
In waiting areas and informal meeting zones, recessed LED downlights are combined with suspended acoustic panels. The luminaires are incorporated directly into selected panels, preserving the clean appearance of the ceiling while placing light exactly where it is required. Their compact design does not compete with the geometry of the acoustic elements, while the comfortable visual atmosphere complements the timber wall finishes and upholstered furniture.
The ONYX Building project demonstrates how several lighting systems can be combined within one coherent concept. Customised S-Line 48 OM luminaires reinforce the architecture, magnetic systems provide comfort in the working areas, and recessed LED downlights complete the meeting and relaxation zones. The result is functional and representative lighting that supports the high standard of one of Sofia’s award-winning contemporary office buildings.
