Polaris Lighting completed the lighting for Nadezhda Medical Center at Paradise Center in Sofia. Part of Nadezhda Hospital, the centre opened on 19 October 2020, expanding access to specialised outpatient medical care. Our task was to create a lighting environment that combines the required functionality with a warmer and more reassuring atmosphere for patients and their families.
The interior of a medical centre needs to support the work of healthcare professionals while reducing the sense of anxiety that can accompany a medical appointment. Light plays an important part in achieving this balance. Rooms must be clearly illuminated and easy to navigate without appearing excessively cold, harsh or visually demanding. The solution for Nadezhda Medical Center is therefore based on uniform general illumination and carefully positioned functional accents.
The centre provides access to specialised consultations, prevention, diagnosis and treatment at a convenient urban location. This creates a continuous flow of patients and requires good visibility in reception areas, waiting spaces, corridors and consultation rooms. The lighting needs to establish a consistent environment across these different zones and make movement between them easier.
COOL XL circular LED profiles are the most recognisable element of the project. Their large diameter and clean geometric form turn them into an active part of the interior design. Instead of functioning only as technical light sources, the luminaires shape the ceiling composition and give the medical centre a distinctive visual identity.
COOL XL provides soft light distributed evenly around the complete circular profile. This helps limit strong contrasts and uncomfortable glare while maintaining the required level of illumination. The circular geometry balances the straight lines of the walls, furniture and circulation areas and contributes to a calmer visual perception of the interior.
Surface-mounted LED downlights complement the circular profiles. These compact luminaires provide clear light in areas where more focused functional illumination is required. Surface mounting enables them to be integrated into different types of ceilings without large recessed openings, while their minimalist form preserves the clean and contemporary appearance of the rooms.
Combining COOL XL with LED downlights allows the lighting to be organised in several layers. The circular luminaires establish the overall atmosphere and visual identity, while the downlights add light at individual functional points. This creates a better balance between comfort, orientation and the visibility required for the medical team’s everyday work.
Healthcare lighting needs to serve people with different requirements, including patients, accompanying family members, doctors and administrative employees. The project therefore does not rely on one luminaire type or create an identical lighting effect throughout the entire interior. The solution reflects the purpose of the different spaces and the need for visitors to navigate them easily and feel more at ease.
The Nadezhda Medical Center project demonstrates how professional lighting can unite healthcare functionality with contemporary interior design. COOL XL gives the space character while providing soft and uniform light, and the LED downlights complete the system with clear functional illumination. The result is a modern and welcoming environment that supports the specialists’ daily work and provides a more comfortable experience for patients.
