Polaris Lighting supplied the lighting for Fitness Flex Ruse, an impressive fitness centre completed in 2021 to an interior design by Adimari Studio. Extending across three levels and covering a total area of 1,020 m², the project transforms an existing underground venue into a contemporary environment for sport, movement and engaging visitor experiences. Our task was to provide lighting that supports the functions of the training areas, highlights the distinctive interior and contributes to visitor safety.
The project turns a former underground restaurant into a fitness centre with a strong and immediately recognisable identity. Because the premises receive limited natural light, artificial lighting is one of the main factors influencing comfort, visibility and the perception of space. Linear LED luminaires supplied by Polaris Lighting establish a clear visual rhythm, guide movement and emphasise the geometry of the ceilings, columns and individual activity zones.
The “Flex Goes Green and Gold” design concept creates two contrasting yet connected atmospheres. The “Green” area, intended for cardio and lighter exercise, combines wood finishes, greenery, nature-inspired imagery and numerous mirrored surfaces. The lighting strengthens the fresh character of this zone and helps the entirely underground interior appear more open and spacious.
The “Gold” area accommodates strength-training equipment and introduces a more dramatic environment dominated by a black ceiling, dark finishes and gold details. Here, the lighting becomes part of a dynamic composition that reflects the intensity of the activities. Light reflected by mirrors and metallic accents adds visual depth while maintaining the comfort required in an active training environment.
Alongside the linear LED solutions, LED downlights provide efficient and even general illumination. This combination enables the reception, circulation areas, cardio sections and strength-training zones to receive lighting appropriate to their individual functions. Good visibility makes orientation easier, supports the safe use of fitness equipment and creates a more comfortable experience throughout the centre.
Particular attention was also paid to emergency and evacuation lighting. In a property arranged across several underground levels, reliable marking of escape routes is an essential part of the overall solution. The lighting therefore performs an important practical and safety-related role in addition to supporting the interior’s visual character.
Fitness Flex Ruse received the BIG SEE Interior Design Award 2021 in the Civic Interior category and was selected as a finalist in the Healthcare & Wellness Design category of the 2021 SBID International Design Awards. The space also serves as a representative showroom environment for Panatta fitness equipment in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Polaris Lighting’s involvement in this recognised project demonstrates how professionally selected lighting can transform a venue without direct access to daylight. We thank Adimari Studio for the successful partnership and the opportunity to create an environment in which architecture, interior design and light work together as one coherent experience.
