In 2023, Polaris Lighting presented its extensive lighting project for Historical Park near the village of Neofit Rilski in the Varna region. The tourist complex explores periods ranging from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic eras through Thracian and Roman history to the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. In such an environment, lighting must provide more than visibility. It needs to support the historical narrative, reveal the architecture after sunset and establish a convincing atmosphere within each individual area.
A principal element of the project is the use of warm light around stone and timber structures. It recalls the natural glow of fire and candles, which were the primary sources of illumination during the historical periods represented by the park. Soft golden tones reveal the uneven texture of the stone, timber elements, arches and decorative ornaments without giving the reconstructions an excessively contemporary appearance.
Light is carefully distributed across the façades so that the architectural volumes remain clearly recognisable after nightfall. Instead of illuminating every surface to the same level, different degrees of brightness create depth and direct attention towards the most important details.
Cooler light is used selectively for marble statues, columns and reliefs. The contrast with the warmly illuminated stone buildings allows the white surfaces to stand out more clearly and gives them a more ceremonial presence. Changes in the tone of light distinguish different materials and architectural styles without relying on intrusive coloured effects.
This approach is particularly visible across the classical façades. Directional illumination outlines the vertical rhythm of the columns, capitals and sculptural compositions, while the resulting shadows reveal the depth of the reliefs.
All principal products used within the project were designed specifically for the requirements of Historical Park. They include WALL WASHER luminaires in lengths of 50 centimetres and one metre. These fixtures distribute light evenly across large vertical surfaces, allowing long façades, colonnades and fortress walls to be illuminated without abrupt interruptions.
The dimensions and lighting characteristics of the products were adapted to the individual architectural elements. The equipment can consequently remain visually discreet during the day while creating a clear and impactful composition after sunset.
The project covers not only the principal façades but also passages, stone corridors, bridges, fortress walls and open areas. In narrower interior spaces, the luminaires reveal the texture of the masonry while supporting orientation. Individual lighting scenes vary according to the material, scale and historical character of each location.
The completed result is a coherent evening environment in which the lighting remains subordinate to the architecture and historical narrative. Through bespoke fixtures, WALL WASHER solutions and a carefully controlled contrast between warm and cool light, Polaris Lighting transforms the individual buildings, statues and visitor routes into a connected lighting experience.
